Sale took an early lead through Tommy Bell with a penalty and he then converted a try from Tommy Taylor to give the home side a 10-0 lead. Leeds responded well after that with a try from forward Alex Reider which was converted by Ed Hainsworth.
The home side edged further in front just before half time when Bell kicked his second penalty of the game to leave it 13-7 at the break.
Once again the young Leeds team hit back with a try from winger Arnie Ellison and Hainsworth then edged Carnegie in front with a penalty.
With 16 minutes to go Bell edged the home side back in front with another penalty but Leeds finished strongly to seal the win.
Replacement back Jamie Birdsall, who was spotted by former Leeds star Rob Rawlinson whilst playing at Queen Ethleburgas College, came on to score two tries either side of an effort from Prince Henry's back row James Tyson. Centre Toby Quarendon kicked the last two conversions to make the final score 34-16.
Commenting on the game Academy Manager Mark Luffman said, "I thought it was a really good contest between two strong teams. It was a tight tussle up until the hour mark and then we managed to pull clear in the end. The impact our bench made was important and the coaching staff were very pleased with the effort of all the lads. Dominic Barrow and Chris Walker both put in good performances whilst winger Will Heylings from Hymers ran well with the ball in hand."
