Yorkshire Carnegie 15 Coventry 5

Yorkshire Carnegie earned a home quarter final in the Championship Cup following a 15-5 victory over Coventry in tough conditions at Emerald Headingley.

Chris Stirling made five changes to his squad who had won against Nottingham, with Myles Thoroughgood coming in for his second appearance and Harry Davey returning to the starting line-up.  There was a late change on the bench after Jake Ilnicki failed a late fitness test so Leeds Beckett player Xavier Valentine was drafted into the squad.

Coming into the game Carnegie had won four of their five Cup pool games, losing only to Coventry, and both teams were aiming for a win to ensure they earned a home tie.

The conditions at Emerald Headingley made it difficult for both teams with heavy rain falling throughout along with freezing temperatures.

The first half was an even contest, with errors preventing Carnegie from building momentum, and it took until 23 minutes for the deadlock to be broken.  After missing the chance to take the lead after 14 minutes when Will Maisey’s penalty kick drifted wide, the visitors eventually found a way over.  After a series of drives Jack Ram picked the ball and found space in the corner for the opening try.  Maisey, who was kicking with a strong wind behind him, was unable to add the conversion to stretch the lead further.

Carnegie responded with a good attacking spell and eventually earned a penalty which Jade Te Rure converted on 32 minutes.

Elijah Niko then made it a home debut to remember when he caught a great high pass from Harry Davey on the wing and then raced clear to the corner, for his second try in two games.  Te Ture was on target with the conversion to put the home side 10-5 in front going into the break.

There was no let up with the rain in the second half, but Davey gave the home fans reason to cheer with the team’s third try.  After Coventry fumbled possession the young winger scooped up the ball and sprinted over, Te Rure though could not add the extras.

Coventry had plenty of opportunities in the second half, with a number of penalties going their way, but Carnegie battled hard and showed good physicality to frustrate their opponents.

The closing stages saw the opposition try to build pressure on the Carnegie line and they had their best chance when they were awarded a penalty at the break down, but they opted to take a quick tap penalty and they subsequently knocked on to give Carnegie a scrum in the dying moments of the game.

The win means Carnegie will play either Cornish Pirates or Bedford in the first week of February.
