London Irish 72 Yorkshire Carnegie 5

London Irish 72 Yorkshire Carnegie 5

13/10/2018

Yorkshire Carnegie suffered a record club defeat as Chris Stirling’s depleted side lost 72-5 to high flying London Irish at Madejski Stadium.

The defeat surpassed the losing margin from the 73-35 defeat at Northampton in 2000 in the Cup and also the previous club record league defeat, which was previously the 66-7 loss at Saracens in March 2008.

The size of the task was always going to be tough for Yorkshire with eleven Championship squad players unavailable through injury and they fell behind after nine minutes when Ben Meehan finished off a break.

Yorkshire Carnegie conceded a penalty try soon after when the maul was pulled down illegally to make it 12-0. To add to their woes, Carnegie had Will Britton sin binned for the offence but the visitors managed to hold firm.

However, as soon as Yorkshire returned to fifteen men, Irish crossed for their second try when full back Tom Parton finished off for the score.

London Irish secured the try bonus point with nine minutes to go until half time as Samoan hooker Motu Maat’u crossed for a try to make his debut for the Exiles. Meehan added the conversion to extend the advantage to 24-0.

Following a long stoppage in play, Yorkshire Carnegie stalwart Matt Smith was stretchered off and things went from bad to worse for Chris Stirling’s men as Irish crossed for another try just before half time as Australian prop Ollie Hoskins went over from the maul to give Declan Kidney’s side a 31-0 lead at the interval.

Parton claimed his second try of the afternoon at the start of the second half before the Irish forwards proved too strong again and Hoskins benefitted from the driving maul to score his second try of the game. This time Meehan was on target to add the conversion.

Irish were in free flow now and running with confidence as they added two more tries in quick succession. Second row Barney Maddison scored the next try before Parton turned provider to put Topsy Ojo to dive over in the corner.

Irish scored their tenth try with 13 minutes to go when replacement Fergus Mulchrone scored, and Meehan added a superb touchline conversion to put the hosts 62-0 in front.

Irish’s pack continued to turn the screw from the rolling maul, substitute hooker Saia Fangia’a getting the try before Hoskins completed his hat trick from short range.

Carnegie did finally manage to cross the Irish whitewash when JB Bruzulier took a quick tap at the penalty and raced in from nearly 50 metres out but it was a brief high point on a disappointing day for Yorkshire.

Live updates are available from the start of the match and for one week afterwards.
