Yorkshire Carnegie 18 Cornish Pirates 13

By Tom Clayton

Yorkshire Carnegie wen for the first time at home since Autumn in a scrappy display against Cornish Pirates.

Carnegie started out stronger and asserted their dominance in the pack from the get go. Joe Buckle and Rich Mayhew were stealing balls left and right and eventually won a penalty for their side in the Pirates’ 22.

As Te Rure went for the corner, the catch and drive was on. The visitors couldn’t handle the force and Marc Thomas popped up with the ball over the line to give the hosts the lead. Umaga converted, 7-0

What followed was 20 minutes of scrums and phase-play, neither side holding on to possession for long enough to do anything.

Carnegie found a gap towards the end of the half and Dan Temm galloped 50 yards before handing the ball off to Elijah Niko who finished for his third try of the season. Umaga missed from touch, 12-0

Before the break, Pirates were in after a spilled ball found its way into the hands of hooker Sam Matvesi who scored infield. The kick as converted and Pirates took another penalty to reduce the gap to two heading in for the break.

The second half carried on where the first left off. Neither side took a strangle hold on the game and Yorkshire appeared to be getting frustrated.

A 50 meter penalty early on from Umaga extended the Carnegie lead and a second took the score to 18 with not long to go. Umaga had missed three attempts at goal in the windy conditions and Pirates had a sniff of a chance to get back into the game.

Scrappy play in the scrum dominated a majority of the time in the half and eventually Tyler Grendall was shown the yellow card. Carnegie, however, couldn’t make the pressure tell and Pirates were still in the game.

Two quick-fire penalties and yellow cards for Josh Bainbridge and Andy Forsyth allowed Pirates to close the gap to three with a penalty of their own. 18-13

On the final play, Pirates spilled the ball and Carnegie confirmed the win at home for the first time in the league since Richmond back in autumn.
