Yorkshire Carnegie 29 Ealing Trailfinders 7

27/01/2019

Yorkshire Carnegie’s winning run came to an end in a hard fought contest against second placed Ealing Trailfinders.

In high winds at Emerald Headingley, Chris Stirling’s side showed great character throughout the game, but came up short against a Trailfinders side who made the most of their opportunities in the second half.

The visitors found themselves a man down after just three minutes when Ben Landry was penalised for a tip tackle and Carnegie were able to take advantage by enjoying the majority of the possession, although they were unable to convert that possession into point until the 30th minute.

Carnegie spent much of the first 40 in the Ealing half, and came close on 18 minutes to opening the try scoring, but a great defence from Will Harries denied the hosts.

A brilliant piece of play from Jacob Umaga after half an hour eventually broke the deadlock.  The full back collected the ball from a loose kick and weaved his way upfield before offloading to the supporting Jade Te Rure, who raced clear under the posts.  Umaga then added the conversion to give his side a deserved 7-0 lead.

The London side responded well and came close when James Cordy Redden almost got the ball down, but good defence from Carnegie ensured the winger was held up over the line.  Just before the break Joe Buckle was shown a yellow card after Carnegie gave away a string of penalties.  Ealing cranked up the pressure as they camped themselves in the Carnegie half, but the homeside held their nerve and showed superb defence to keep them out and go in at half time with the lead.

Six minutes into the first half Ealing crossed for their first try of the game when former Carnegie player Lewis Jones dived over under the posts.  Lydon made the initial break going past two Carnegie defenders before getting the ball to Jones, who raced 35 metres and stepped passed his defender for the try.  Lydon added the conversion to level the scores.

Lydon nudged Trailfinders ahead on 58 minutes with a penalty from 40 metres out and then ten minutes later Jordy Reid got his team's second try.  From the line out the flanker pushed past his defenders to set Jordan Burns away, the scrum half race diagonally across the field to go over in the corner.  Lydon was accurate with a difficult touchline conversion to make it 7-17.

Ealing took confidence from the score and on 75 minutes put the game beyond Carnegie when Cordy Redden burst through two tackles for their third try following sustained pressure in the Carnegie half.  This time Lydon’s kick drifted wide.

Yorkshire Carnegie still continued to fight to the end and on 80 minutes they had a great chance but were unlucky to knock on in the build up and Ealing were awarded the scrum.

Trailfinders had the final say in the game when superb play from Burns got them in a good attacking position before he found Will Harries in space and the winger finished off the move to claim the bonus point try.  Lydon completed a near perfect afternoon with the boot with the conversion to secure the 29-7 win.
