Carnegie earned a hard fought bonus point victory away at Nottingham, following an excellent second half display. Chris Stirling’s men travelled to Lady Bay looking to bounce back from their home defeat to Ealing in their last league outing.

However, it was Nottingham who started the brighter of the two teams with Shane O’Leary slotting a penalty after 5 minutes, following a period of sustained pressure.

Carnegie battled back well and managed to go ahead after 12 minutes when Jade Te Rure dived over following some good work from the forward pack. 10 minutes later, Carnegie scored again off the back of a powerful driving maul which was finished off by hooker, Joe Buckle.

Nottingham soon hit back with a try of their own through Tim Cardell who bundled his way over the line from close range. O’Leary’s conversion made the score 10-14, which it stayed until half time.

Once again, it was Nottingham who scored the first points of the half. David William collected a loose kick to race 70m downfield and score a breakaway try somewhat against the run of play. However, Carnegie showed great character to reply with a try of their own just 5 minutes later. After a number of brutal carries from the forwards, the ball was eventually shifted out to young winger Harry Davey who dotted down nicely.

Carnegie’s bonus point was secured when captain Rich Mayhew crashed over from a strong driving maul which was a significant feature Yorkshire’s second half dominance.

With the last play of the game, Te Rure’s inside pass to George Watkins allowed the powerful winger to smash through the Nottingham defence. Umaga, who kicked wonderfully throughout the match, added the conversion which rounded off an excellent second half performance from the boys!

A 5 point victory closes the gap on 9th place London Scottish and lifts us 14 points clear of Hartpury in 12th place. Next up for Carnegie is Jersey Reds back home at Emerald Headingley.

Live updates are available from the start of the match and for one week afterwards.
