Yorkshire Carnegie 21 Doncaster Knights 12

By Tom Clayton

Yorkshire Carnegie come out on top in the Yorkshire derby against rivals Doncaster Knights.

The first half was an intensely scrappy affair as neither side could retain the ball for a few phases without knocking on.

Doncaster struck first as they capitalised on a quick-tap free kick and number eight Josh Tyrell crashed over from short, the kick converted by Kurt Morath to give the visitors the early lead.

At this point Yorkshire woke up and started to attack the Doncaster defensive line with powerful running.

Penalties conceded by the visitors gave Yorkshire field-position and a signature catch and drive from the hosts was collapsed over the line. Referee Karl Dickson awarded the penalty try and sin-binned ex Carnegie captain Ryan Burrows.

Yorkshire were over again from another catch and drive minutes later. A clever lineout move gave Dan Temm possession as the point of attack avoided the sack and allowed Yorkshire to cruise over the line for a second. Chris Elder converted.

Doncaster finished the first half stronger as full back Cameron Cowell spotted a gap and beat three defenders to go over in the corner.

The kick was missed and time was called on an error-strewn first half, the saw neither side control the game at any point.

The second half carried on from where we left off as neither side were convincing with ball in hand.

Yorkshire scored their first (and only) points of the half within five minutes as Dan Temm scored his second of the day and 14th of the season from a quickly taken free kick off the back of a scrum.

The rest of the half was extremely scrappy with multiple errors from either side.

Most of the half was spent in Docnaster’s half as the Knights either defended a strong Yorkshire attack or tried to build with the ball in hand.

Doncaster’s only shot at points ended in a penalty from Kurt Morath striking the post from 30 meters out.

The game ended in a flurry of attacking play as both sides looked for respective bonus points, but a final knock on from the visitors saw Yorkshire gather and kick to touch, sealing yet another win in the Championship
