Yorkshire Carnegie 22 Hartpury 21
By Tom Clayton
Yorkshire spent a majority of the first 20 minutes pegged back inside their own half, repelling a persistent Hartpury side.
It was hosts Yorkshire who scored the first points of the game when Matt Smith crashed over from short on 22 minutes. Carnegie had gained field position through numerous penalties and after tapping and going from the latest, Smith gathered the ball and carried two defenders over the line with him. Chris Elder converted simply from in front of the posts.
It didn’t take Yorkshire long to extend the lead, as Hartpury’s defence started to show cracks and the hosts were in an attacking mood.
Miles Thoroughgood was on hand to finish the move as he sliced through a gap and cantered in for his third try of the season. Elder converted impressively from touch.
Hartpury finished the half stronger, as hooker Luke Stratford gathered a loose ball and scored for the visitors and Sam Leeming converted to bring the score to within seven points.
Half Time – Yorkshire Carnegie 14 – 7 Hartpury Rugby
Yorkshire started the second half perfectly, winning the ball from the kick off and handing it to Dan Temm, who powered over the line to claim the score. Elder missed the kick but Yorkshire looked more comfortable.
With half an hour to go, Hartpury got into the game and were capitalising on Carnegie mistakes.
The visitors would score two tries in ten minutes through Tom Dodd and Toby Venner, the latter making his Championship debut. Sam Leeming converted all of the kicks to give the visitors a surprising lead.
Yorkshire hit back with ten to go, and a string of penalties saw Hartpury centre Luke Eves sin binned and Chris Elder point to the sticks. Elder converted giving the lead, and the eventual win to Yorkshire Carnegie
