Community Wednesday: Project Rugby offering more unforgettable opportunities for Mixed Ability sides

09/01/2019

As part of Yorkshire Carnegie’s Project Rugby delivery, the club’s community team joined forces with Sale Sharks Community to offer two Mixed Ability sides the chance to play at the half time interval during Sale v Saracens at the AJ Bell.

York RI Steamers travelled over from Yorkshire for the game with Stockport RUFC providing the opposition.

The players from York RI Steamers were a credit to the club and the county, playing some fantastic rugby and showing the best values the game has to offer. This opportunity was a reward to the players, coaches and club members who since the summer had put a tremendous amount of work into creating and maintaining a Mixed Ability rugby offer at the club.

Alongside support from the Yorkshire Carnegie community team, the Steamers have been running sessions on alternate Monday evenings and have steadily grown in numbers. The success of their programme so far is that a player from their Mixed Ability team has already grown the confidence to make an appearance for the club’s second team.

The Steamers head coach, Lee O’Brien, who has been running the sessions along with other members of York RI attended the game on Friday and said he was grateful for the experience.

“It was a great night,” said Lee. “The guys really enjoyed both the game at half time and being able to watch a Premiership fixture. For many of them, it was their first opportunity to watch a live Premiership game. We are thankful to Sale’s and Yorkshire Carnegie’s community departments for organising the evening for the players and supporters. The support we have received from Carnegie so far has been great and we are looking forward to continuing this into the new year.”

Lisa McCann, Head of Community for Yorkshire Carnegie added: “It was a fantastic evening and we are very grateful to Georgie and the team at Sale for the opportunity. We are delighted to be working with other clubs as part of Project Rugby. We are looking forward to the return visit to Emerald Headingley for a Yorkshire Carnegie fixture”
