Getting to know you: Player by player breakdown of tonight’s team


With the Martyn Wood and Joe Ford era beginning tonight at Nottingham in the Championship Cup and 23 debutants on display we thought it would be a good idea to go through each player to give you a bit more information on each of the team.

15. Tim Bitirim

Utility back Tim Bitirim has joined the club from Cambridge having started last season at Coventry. He earned his chance in professional rugby after impressing with Loughborough Students. The former Saracens and Wasps Academy utility back has also represented England Counties U20s.


14. Andrew Lawson

Winger Andrew Lawson has joined from Harrogate having previously played for Westoe RFC and Blaydon RFC.


13. Lee Smith

The former Leeds Rhinos winger and full back, who won three Super League titles in successive years with his home-town club from 2007-09 and played for England in the 2008 World Cup, will join a rare group of players to have played league and union at the famous stadium.

Smith, 33, also had spells at Wakefield Trinity, Leigh Centurions and Bradford Bulls as well as playing union with Wasps and Newcastle.


12. James Robins

James Robins has joined from Chester and can also play at fly half.


11. Tom Varndell

Capped four times for England, Tom Varndell holds the record as the leading try scorer in the Gallagher Premiership with 92 tries during his time with Leicester Tigers, Wasps and Bristol.

At Leicester he won the title in 2007 and with 180 Premiership appearances, as well as international honours, Varndell brings a wealth of experience to Carnegie.  A Commonwealth Games silver medallist in Melbourne in 2006.

In recent years he has played with Scarlets and French club Soyaux Angouleme and this year played with South China Tigers in Hong Kong in the Global Rapid Rugby series.


10. Dan Lancaster

Academy vice captain Dan Lancaster, who has been part of the England U18 squad, previously played at Bishop Burton and West Park Leeds. An excellent goal kicker, he had his first taste of senior rugby last season at Hull Ionians.


9. James Elliott

Scrum half James Elliott returns to the city having played for Leeds Beckett before moving to Gallagher Premiership side Newcastle Falcons. The former Durham City player has also captained England Students.


1. James Flynn

Sale-born Flynn, 25, was with the Sharks for seven seasons, amassing 55 appearances after making his debut against London Irish in 2012. He also had brief loans at Stockport and Sedgley Park and fought back to full fitness at the end of last season.


2. Louis Musetti

Hooker Louis Musetti has joined Yorkshire Carnegie on trial having previously featured in the BUCS Super Rugby competition with Northumbria.


3. Conor Davidson

Prop Conor Davidson has joined the club from Sydney-based side Manly Marlins. He can play on either side of the front row.


4. Ed Bloodworth

Another recruit from student rugby is second row Ed Bloodworth, who has impressed playing for Northumbria University and originally comes from Kesteven Rugby Club in Grantham.


5. Alex Humfrey

Another recruit from Manly Marlins in Australia is second row Alex Humfrey.  He has played for Wales Students whilst at Bath University and signed for Bath back in 2016.


6. Will Hill

20-year old blindside flanker who comes from Northallerton and previously played at Sedbergh, he has joined the club from Darlington Mowden Park.


7. Taylor Gough

Back row Taylor Gough has joined Yorkshire Carnegie on loan from Leicester Tigers. Part of the Tigers Academy League winning squad in 2017/18, back-rower he played his junior rugby with Leicester Forest before joining the ranks at Welford Road.

The Tigers Under-18s, with Gough a key figure, remained unbeaten throughout their 2017/18 campaign and the local youngster stepped up to the Development ranks for the 2018/19 season, playing in the Premiership Shield as well as playing in National League rugby for Loughborough Students. He made his senior debut for Tigers in the Premiership Cup at Northampton in January 2019.


8. Callum Bustin

London-born rugby league player Callum Bustin joins Yorkshire Carnegie from Bradford Bulls. The former London, Castleford and Newcastle league forward is looking forward to the switch of codes.


16. Ben Sugars

Another player to have come through the ranks at West Park Leeds is hooker Ben Sugars. He attended Grammar School at Leeds and last year made his senior debut at Otley.


17. Cole Wilson

Cole has joined the club on trial for the Championship Cup campaign on loan from Old Brods. He also plays for Morpeth whilst attending university at Northumbria University.


18. Will Archer

Will Archer has joined Yorkshire Carnegie on trial for the Championship Cup campaign.


19. Mike Williams

Mike Williams has joined Yorkshire Carnegie on loan from Bath Rugby, having moved to the Recreation Ground this summer from Premiership rivals Leicester Tigers. Comfortable across both the second row and back row, the 27 year-old spent four seasons in the East Midlands. At 6 ft 5 and 18 stone, Williams adds a considerable physical presence to the squad and the forward pack.


20. James Seabrook

James Seabrook has joined Yorkshire Carnegie on loan from Gallagher Premiership side Wasps, where he is a member of their extended Academy squad. The 20-year-old back rower went to Warwick University and has played in the Premiership Shield for Wasps. He has also spent time on loan at Stourbridge.


21. Guy Graham

Flanker Guy Graham has joined the club on loan from Newcastle Falcons. He moved to the Falcons in the summer of 2018 from Scottish club Hawick, having played previously for Carlisle RFC. Part of the Scotland Under-20s side which defeated England during the 2018 Six Nations, Graham featured prominently for the Scots during the World U20 Championship. The younger brother of Falcons flanker Gary Graham, Guy is also the son of Newcastle's Premiership title and cup-winning prop George Graham.


22. Joe Green

Scrum half Joe Green came through the ranks of Woodhouse Grove School playing 3 years in the 1st XV and captained in his final year leading them to winning the National Schools Plate. He is still a member of the Yorkshire Academy and has joined on loan for tonight’s game.


23. Joe Carlisle

Fly half Joe Carlisle has joined Yorkshire Carnegie from National One side Old Elthamians, who challenge Ampthill all the way for promotion to the Championship last season.

Swindon-born Carlisle is a Worcester Warriors Academy product who also had spells at Wasps, Benetton Treviso, London Welsh and USA Perpignan.
