The club is sad to announce the passing of John Hopkins on at the age of 80. He had been ill for the last 18 months but passed away peacefully on Thursday 5th July in Airedale hospital.

In his youth John was a fine athlete running in the 100 yards for his home town Leeds AC when the running track was on the outfield of the cricket pitch at Headingley Stadium. Following his National Service in the RAF he had a long and successful playing career as a centre for his local club Roundhay RUFC and was captain in the 1963 – 64 season. He served in various committee roles that included building the membership to over 900 members and was Chairman when the club merged with Headingley FC in 1992 to form Leeds RUFC. John was elected as an honorary life member in 1986 and he was a Director on the board at Leeds RUFC Ltd until 2001.

He married Christine in 1965 and spent his entire working life at YEB (Yorkshire  Electricity). He lived just ½ mile from Chandos Park and later moved to Addingham and he is survived by his wife Christine and Thomas the eldest of his 3 brothers.

The requiem mass is at Church of the Sacred Heart on Stockeld Road in Ilkley (LS29 9HA ) at 11am on Friday 20th July and afterwards at Clevedon House in Ben Rhydding (LS29 8AQ).
