NEXT UP: Yorkshire Carnegie v Bedford Blues, Sunday 3rd February , Kick off 3.00 PM

Yorkshire Carnegie will take on Bedford Blues at Emerald Headingley Stadium in the Championship Cup quarter final on Sunday 3rd February, kick off 3pm.

Despite their league position, Carnegie have improved from the start of the season; the Championship Cup allowing Chris Stirling’s side to build winning momentum. They meet a Bedford side that are flying third in the league with none wins from thirteen.

Cup Form

Despite their early struggles in the league, five wins out of their six matches in this year’s new cup competition guaranteed Carnegie a place in the quarter finals. With their only loss coming away to Coventry, back to back wins against Doncaster Knights was one of the Yorkshire’s highlights as they topped Pool 1 with 22 points.

On the other hand, Bedford finished third in Pool 3 with three wins and three losses. Wins over Hartpury twice and Cornish Pirates at home, with three bonus points, helped the Blues to 15 points. Along with Nottingham from Pool 1, Bedford took the runners up place available in the quarter finals.

Nine league wins, four of which came consecutively before the Championship Cup pool matches, have put Bedford third in the league behind Ealing and London Irish.

Their home record has been impressive this campaign with four from five; their only defeat coming against London Scottish.

Their last game against Coventry - 105-point thriller at Goldington Road - will be one that fans talk about for years to come.  15 tries in all were scored, the final one coming for Bedford in injury time to secure a 53-52 win.

In the Championship Cup, the Blues had one of the hardest groups, competing against London Irish, Cornish Pirates and Hartpury College, but managed to secure three wins and earn qualification as one of the best runners up.

Last Time Out

The two sides met at the start of October when Bedford came out 28-21 victors at Emerald Headingley. Bedford were coming off three consecutive defeats but the win left Carnegie at the foot of the table. An early penalty gave the visitors the lead before Josh Bainbridge scored from the rolling maul to put Carnegie ahead.

Former Carnegie player Jarad Williams took advantage of a slow defensive line to power over for Bedford before Yorkshire’s discipline gave away another penalty goal, slotted by Jacob Atkins to make the score 3-13 at the half time whistle.

More ill-discipline in the second half cost Carnegie another three points, Atkins kicking the penalty, before George Watkins brought the game back to 14-16 as he sprinted off an Andy Forsyth pass to score. Jacob Fields ensured the win for Bedford, scoring off a rolling maul, before Dan Temm scored late for Yorkshire, closing the score at 21-28.
