Yorkshire Carnegie U18 19 Sale Sharks U18 19

Yorkshire Carnegie U18 kept up their unbeaten start to their U18 Premiership Rugby League campaign but they were grateful to a late penalty from Jack Metcalf from half way with a minute to go to snatch a 19-19 with Sale Sharks.

The Under 18s got off to a winning start to their season last Saturday at Emerald Headingley against Worcester Warriors and the side showed five changes.

Hooker Lawrence Mason started in the front row whilst there was a new pairing in the second row. Will Smith was at number eight last week but he lines up alongside Will Pritchard, who was a replacement against Worcester, to lock the scrum.

Skipper Archie Smeaton started at number eight  to allow Ted Wainwright to come into the back row. There was just one change in the backline with Eddie Wainibuli starting on the wing.

The home side took the lead early on when full back Joe Carpenter made a break from near his own line before kicking up field for Wainibuli to collect and go over for the try. Fly half Dan Lancaster was unable to add the conversion but Yorkshire led 5-0 after just three minutes.

Sale Sharks responded with a penalty just inside the Carnegie half which Tom Curtis slotted over after eight minutes and the visitors then took the lead ten minutes later when Curtis kicked a second penalty, this time from 45 metres out to give his side a 6-5 advantage.

The lead was short lived however as Yorkshire gained a penalty from the restart and Lancaster was on target to edge Yorkshire back into an 8-6 lead.

However, the lead changed hands again before half time when prop James Harper went over from close range. Curtis was on target again to give Sale a 13-8 lead at the break.

Yorkshire were looking to find a response at the start of the second half and it was Carpenter again who was the provider. He stepped through the defence before racing over to score in the corner. His West Park Leeds club mate Lancaster was unable to add the conversion but the game was right back in the balance at 13-13 with 28 minutes to go.

Sale had the chance to go in front again wiht a penalty for offside which Curtis converted but that was cancelled out after 56 minutes when Lancaster found his range to make it 16-16.

With ten minutes to go, the Sharks took the lead once again as Curtis kicked his fourth penalty of the night to put the visitors back in control. However, in the final minute centre Metcalf stepped up to seal the draw for his side.
